Programs of The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico

Council Fans and Prospective Members,

At the present time there isn't an organization in Puerto Rico that provides its residents with a forum that openly discusses global affairs and, how they relate to Puerto Rico's economy, social and political events. The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico is proud to announce a number of programs that will provide Puerto Rico's resident with the best analysis and discussion of global affairs and, how world events indeed can affect our daily lives. The programs of WAC of Puerto Rico are the following:

1) Distinguished Speaker Program

The Distinguished Speaker Program is a joint series of World Affairs Council of America and The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico. The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico will regularly hosts prominent leaders from around the world to address current and compelling issues faced by the international community. This speaker series provide the public with an opportunity to meet policymakers, foreign policy experts, international business leaders and diplomats who are closely involved with today's crucial international issues.

2) Roundtable Forum

The Roundtable Forum is program design to bring together local, national, world leaders, scholars and business leaders to discuss current global affairs from different perspectives and, how these global affairs can benefit and/or impact Puerto Rico’s future. The Council is committed to have these Roundtable Forum's address Puerto Rico's role's in international issues while presently being a Commonwealth under the jurisdiction of the United States and, what Puerto Rico's role would be under a different political status arrangement.

3) Consul “Open House” Series

The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico in conjunction with the World Affairs Council of America, Foreign Consulate offices in Puerto Rico and Embassies in Washington, DC will coordinate open house for Council members and their families. The program will allow Council members to meet diplomats from other countries currently assigned in Puerto Rico and the US.

4) World Quest Competition

World Quest is a Flagship Program of the world affairs council system. The game was invented by the Charlotte Council and is now widely played at the adult and high school levels around the country. It is a team game testing competitors' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, and culture. The World Affairs Councils of America started the national competition in Washington, DC in March 2003. Participants come from high schools that work with the World Affairs Council network. The game is a contest between 4-person teams representing a high school. Teams compete by answering rounds of questions projected by PowerPoint onto a screen. The questions test their knowledge of current affairs, world leaders, geography, recent history, flags, international organizations, countries, regions, the world economy, culture, religion, and more. It is moderated by a prominent person in the field of international affairs or journalism.

5) Teacher of the Year Award

Each year, The World Affairs Council of Puerto Rico selects as its Teacher of the Year a Puerto Rico educator demonstrated outstanding dedication to teaching with a global perspective. The Teacher of the Year receives the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Award for Excellence in International Education – a $1000 grant designed to advance the study of international affairs in local schools.

6) World Affairs Scholar - Student Scholarship

The Ramon Power y Giralt Student Scholarship Program - The Council awards $2,000 in scholarships, all to one student or divided between two students. The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need, academic ability, character, leadership, and community involvement. The recipient must have a demonstrated interest in international issues and intend to major in a social science related to world affairs such as international studies, economics, political science, geography, anthropology, or history.

The Founding Board of Trustees is looking forward in establishing mentioned programs and is confident that Council members and the general public will find these programs very beneficial and, a positive contribution to the discussion of global affairs in Puerto Rico.
